Work and Play
“The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his information and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he’s always doing both.”
– James A. Michener

I’ve loved this quote since I first came across it in Kevin Carroll’s book “Rules of the Red Rubber Ball.” Carroll’s book inspires us to recapture the wonderment and play from our child hood and incorporate it into our work and everyday lives. The author was the Chief Catalyst at Nike. His job was to catalyze teams and help them become more innovative all while increasing productivity and having fun. His philosophy on how to translate this into your work is captured in the following seven steps.

  1. Commit to it
  2. Seek out encouragers
  3. Work out your creative muscle
  4. Prepare to shine
  5. Speak up
  6. Expect the unexpected
  7. Maximize the day

Just in case you didn’t know I was a semi-nerd when it comes to stuff like this, below is my autographed copy of Kevin’s book!

I’m currently producing a new music video called “WHO I AM” by the up and coming group “Avion Roe”.  While I’m working on this project the concept of understanding self and your place in the world comes to mind.

Take a listen to the song below:
